Man Jailed After Eighth Drink Driving Offence

A Kinawley, Fermanagh man who has 7 previous convictions for drink-driving and 3 further convictions for disqualified driving has been sent to prison for to a total of six months and additionally disqualified from driving for a total of ten years.

The Fermanagh Magistrates court heard that Rosemary Bradley, the ex-wife of the defendant Gary bailey, called the police on 13th July and told police the defendant was outside her house shouting abuse through the letterbox.

When police arrived at the address the defendant, who was outside the house, got into his car, a Volkswagen Passat, and drove away with the police in persuit who eventually stopped him in Kinawley village where he attempted to make off on foot but was stopped and finally arrested by police.

Police noted the defendant appeared to be intoxicated. The defendant however refused to give a sample for analysis. It transpired that the defendant had already been disqualified from driving on 06/05/2008.

District Judge Liam McNally, referred to the defendant's record, noted he has seven previous convictions for drink-driving, and three previous driving while disqualified convictions when considering sentencing.
