Teenage drinkers to be breathalysed

A new initiative is starting in Tiverton with teenagers being breath tested before they can enter an under 18's disco in a bid to curb under age drinking. In one instance a young person was attempting to enter the club and proved to be 1 ½ times over the drink drive limit.

It has become a habit with some of the youngsters to consume alcohol before going to the disco.

They are also searched for cans and bottles before they are allowed in and any found are confiscated.

It seems that the effects of the alcohol did not become apparent until after the youngsters had gained entry and they would then become disorderly and be thrown out.

Now that the new system has been introduced the youngsters know that they face the possibility of being randomly tested as they wait to enter the premises. If the staff have any reason to believe that they have been drinking they will be targeted for a specimen.

The equipment used is the same as that used by the Police and will show even the slightest amount of alcohol in the system.
